Working with Wine

There are a few programs I wanted to take with me from Windows, including some games.

Some programs work fine under Wine, with no tweaking to make them behave.  I found that notepad++ and Moffsoft calculator worked ‘out of the box’.  Some have problems installing and/or running, or need registry tweaks.

Two sources for fixes for this sort of problem are:

http://appdb.winehq.org/  and

http://www.cedega.com/gamesdb/

These are game databases for Wine and Cedega respectively.  Wine is the free open source Windows emulation layer for Linux, and the Cedega Gaming Service is a subscription service providing a Wine-like capability, aimed for gaming.

Some games simply won’t run, even if installed ‘successfully’.
