Why Ubuntu?

I started out in Linux with baby steps – live distros first – mostly Knoppix.  In increments, I learned how to save my configuration, then my home directory and setting, default printer, desktop settings, etc.

Because Knoppix is based on Debian, I decided to try Debian when I had a spare PC – a hand-me-down from my daughter.  I found I couldn’t start Open Office – it kept crashing, so I tried Ubuntu.  The installation went smoothly, Open Office ran fine, Firefox 3.0 (beta) was included, so I stayed with that, and got on top of it.

When I bought my KVM switch, I was able to switch from Win XP to Ubuntu (two separate machines easily, sharing one monitor, keyboard and mouse between the two PCs.   Unfortunately my LCD monitor died a few weeks ago, and I had to go back to an old CRT monitor.  The highest resolution under Ubuntu I can get is 960×600.

Still, Ubuntu is up-to-date for Open Office and Firefox, has frequent updates, and is ridiculously easy to update and install software.
