Installation Choices

Assuming you’re starting with Windows, you have several options.

You can download and run Wubi, a Windows installer which creates a disk image, apparently within a folder, containing Ubuntu. An extra option is provided at boot time. Wubi doesn’t have to be burned to CD, just run like any other Windows program. Wubi is available at

You can create another partition, keeping your Windows partition, and install Ubuntu there.

You can take the whole hard drive for Linux, wiping out Windows. I only have experience with this route.
