Ubuntu Recovery

I have a dual-boot PC, Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Windows 2000, as well as a few live Linux CDs, Knoppix, Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux, and have done some research on my dilemma.  I chose during boot to enter Ubuntu recovery.  This gave me the further option of starting  a root shell.  I tried the following commands:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I did not fix the problem, but I may have found what the problem is.   I got the following messages (roughly remembered):

unable to resolve us.archive.ubuntu.com
unable to resolve security.ubuntu.com

I seem to have been unable to connect to the ubuntu repository.  My next step is to read the man pages for dpkg, apt-get and aptitude, or failing that, find some means of selecting a repository closest to me.
